Remodel A 1920s Bungalow Bathroom

Bathrooms are often one of the most utilized rooms of the house, so their decoration is particularly important to the overall appearance of a home. There are many different ways to design a bathroom, ranging from sleek contemporary to Country farmhouse. Retro-inspired bathroom design highlights vintage materials and accessories and is a novel way to incorporate a unique look and feel to any bathroom space. Creating a 1920s bathroom in a bath area is particularly interesting due to its use of a myriad of vintage-inspired porcelain surfaces, built-in cabinets and Art Deco lighting. A retro bathroom remodel adds much style and function to any home and is fairly simple to accomplish with a few decorating tips.

Instructions

1. Choose appropriate colors. Retro 1920s bathroom decor includes colors such as soft green, light pink and white. Use these hues in wall color, tile accents and as a basis for accessories for a bathroom with authentic 1920s style.

2. Incorporate a wall-hung sink. Choose a white porcelain wall-hung sink for your 1920s-inspired bathroom. Wall-hung sinks feature exposed plumbing that is either left visible or is hidden with a gathered, floor-length sink skirt. As a final touch, select polished chrome faucets.

3. Select porcelain floor tiles. Flooring in white porcelain with black geometric accents is a hallmark of a retro-style bathroom. Hexagonal-shaped tiles are especially appropriate for a 1920s-style bathroom.

4. Accent with Art Deco-style lighting fixtures. The Art Deco period dates from the 1920s, and the style utilizes geometric shapes as an inspiration for architectural and decorative items. Add Art Deco sconces on either side of the sink area, and incorporate dimmers to enhance the retro bathroom design.

5. Add a hot water-heated towel bar. The addition of a hot water-heated towel bar adds a retro touch to the bathroom and enhances the overall 1920s decor.

6. Add a built-in linen cabinet. Custom built-in cabinets are a way to maximize storage space and provide an authentic 1920s-style bathroom feature to your room. Glass cabinet doors create visual interest and make the room feel larger.

7. Select a recessed wall medicine cabinet. Adding a mirrored medicine cabinet that fits into a recessed space over the wall-mounted sink will further the retro design of the room. Choose a mirrored unit that has etched glass accents for an added vintage feel.

8. Accessorize with vintage bath items. Display retro bathroom accents, such as vintage powder tins, silver hairbrushes, shaving items, old perfume bottles and antique soap dishes, on a shelf or vanity area in the bathroom for a finishing touch to your 1920s-style bathroom.
