Make Your Bedroom Look Chic

Use a limited color palette to tie your room together.

Giving your bedroom a chic makeover doesn't have to be difficult, bottom out your savings or rely on the help of a designer. By understanding the basics of interior design and working with the elements you have available, you can take a room so dreary it puts you to sleep and make it into a stylish retreat that you're glad to see first thing each morning.

Instructions

1. Cut out clutter. Identify any elements in your room that don't express your personal style or serve any useful purpose, and remove them. Donate working items to a local charity, and save any fabrics that are still in good condition for repurposing as rags, bandannas or fabric for future small sewing projects.

2. Pick a color palette. Use colors that are warm but not very vivid for an inviting but restful space. Choose colors that you can picture living with for a long time. Assign the more versatile colors to the elements you plan to keep the longest, such as an expensive bedspread or the walls. Reserve more daring colors for accent items or areas.

3. Go with either a minimalist or a maximalist effect. Put your belongings in sleek, closed cabinets and select furnishings with simple lines for a spare, minimal look. Add decorative details and rich bedding, pillows and rugs for an abundant aesthetic. Find a middle ground if you prefer moderation, but aim for consistency throughout the room.

4. Select your wall hangings carefully. Use paintings that play off the other colors and textures in the room. Use creative frames or matting to pick up accent colors. Opt for mirrors instead of artwork to create a more spacious look. Position mirrors across from windows to brighten the room and bring the outdoors in.

5. Replace, rearrange and repurpose furnishings as necessary to play to your room's strengths. Use fewer, multifunctional pieces in a smaller room, such as a chest for seating plus storage. Select an eye-catching overhead lamp to show off high ceilings. Put small lamps on your bedside table for a cozier effect that's also practical for reading. Keep window treatments simple on rounded or decorative windows. Use plenty of linens and soft elements if you have hard floors.

6. Finish your bedroom look with accents that show your personality and draw the eye around the space. Add decorative elements, such as colorful bottles or a childhood toy. Use the knickknacks and decorations sparingly to keep the look chic and stylish. Keep your color palette and minimal vs. maximal standpoint in mind as you add the last details.
