Decorate A Traditional Bedroom With Blue And Brown

A gleaming wood floor adds a warm glow to this traditional bedroom.

The traditional style of decorating works well in a bedroom because traditional decor is meant to be comfortable and calming. Traditional decor may require less-frequent updating than some other types of decor because it is based on classic designs. Antiques are commonly mixed with current furnishings in traditional decor. Combining tones of blue and brown in a traditionally decorated bedroom provides visual interest to the room while maintaining the classic elegance the traditional style is most known for.

Instructions

1. Set the mood in your bedroom by painting the walls a medium tone of blue or brown. Choose blue if you need help relaxing at night: According to WebMD, blue has a calming affect on the human brain and has been shown to lower blood pressure. Brown is considered a warm color that enhances the feeling of being connected to another person.

2. Select bedding and other textiles with tone-on-tone stripes, small patterns, geometrics or florals. Mix and match complementary patterns with solid colors to create interest. Purchase window treatments with a slightly formal appeal.

3. Include a traditional area rug in complementary colors. Divide the space in a large bedroom by using one large rug under the bed and a smaller one to anchor a reading nook. Remember that using different shades of the same color such as tan, medium brown and dark cocoa extends your color scheme while creating variety; don't be afraid to choose a rug with more than one shade of blue and/or brown.

4. Purchase a matching bedroom suite in medium to dark wood tones, or furnish the room with renovated antiques. Traditional furniture is solid, understated and comfortable.

5. Arrange accessories like lamps, artwork and personal mementos so they are not cluttered. Traditional decor imbues a room with a sense of calm, so avoid big pops of graphic color in your accessories. Bed pillows in the same shade as the wall paint, or a grouping of photos framed in warm brown wood, will reinforce your color scheme without making the room look busy.
