Insulate Bathroom Exhaust Fans

In most modern homes, an exhaust fan in each bathroom that has a shower or bath is standard. These exhaust fans help to remove moisture and humidity from the air in your bathroom, which can prevent more serious problems, such as mold and mildew formation, as well as less serious problems like a musty smell. However, bathroom exhaust fans can also come with problems. Cold air leaking from an attic or cold pipe is one example. Insulate your bathroom exhaust fan to prevent air leakage problems.

Instructions

1. Remove the grill plate from your bathroom exhaust fan to expose it and the surrounding area.

2. Use professional grade duct tape to seal any joints in metal piping that lead to the attic. This can be a source of cold air. The duct tape you use cannot be the common type. You must purchase it from a location that sells ductwork, air conditioners and furnaces.

3. Replace the internal flapper damper on the bathroom exhaust fan with a roof cap. This will seal it off more effectively when not in use to prevent cold air from getting into your bathroom.

4. Spray any metal pipes you see with foam insulation. This will insulated the pipes, preventing them from getting so cold that they leak cold air into your bathroom.
