Decorate Loft Bedrooms

Loft spaces feature architectural interest but present certain design challenges.

Loft bedrooms are unique spaces usually found in urban settings, or in rooms where a bedroom was not the intended purpose. For example, a loft bedroom might be located in an attic. One of the beauties of loft bedrooms is their often totally open floor plans, but this can also make them difficult to decorate. To decorate a loft living area, it is important to first analyze how you intend to use the space.

Instructions

1. Delineate the space for separate uses. Lofts are wide open spaces which rarely feature closets, privacy or focus. For example, it can be hard to separate a sleeping area from a reading space. Create a space for your bed, a dressing area, a storage area and a work space by arranging furniture into groupings based on the desired purpose. You can use screens, curtains or furniture to create privacy for dressing or hiding away clutter, as well as for separating the room's uses.

2. Use a color palette that will unify the space. If the loft is small or poorly lit, you might want to avoid dark colors that will make the room seem smaller and cave-like. Instead, use light, airy colors that will work well throughout the space, with colorful accents. Dark and contrasting colors can help differentiate areas in your room. For example, a vibrantly painted accent wall can help to separate a work desk from the sleeping area.

3. Arrange furniture to create depth in the loft space. In open lofts it is tempting to push furniture along the edges of the room to save room and leave walking space in the middle, but doing this can actually make the room seem smaller. Instead, use the delineations of the room to group like furniture throughout the room. Sometimes angling larger pieces of furniture from a corner, such as a bed or dresser, can better fill a space than if you push them flush against a wall.
