Small Bedroom Paint Ideas

Don't be afraid to use bold colors in a small bedroom.

Homeowners consider many ideas to make a small bedroom seem bigger using paint. Most stick with lighter colors, because darker colors don't reflect light as well and can make a small room seem even smaller. If your small bedroom has a good deal of light coming in from a window or artificial source, however, dark, rich colors can be a part of your decor. Making sure your bedroom paint colors provide a complementary link to the rest of the house is key to making the room seem more open.

Bring Color to the Ceiling

Paint the ceiling the same color as the walls so the color flows unbroken throughout the room. A white ceiling on top of colored walls draws your eye to the color break and acts like a "lid" for the bedroom, making it seem even smaller.

Colorful Surprise

Paint one wall in a bright, bold color such as lime green. The colorful wall will act as a focal point and add the illusion of depth to the room. If your small bedroom has a fireplace or window on one wall, paint that wall with the bold color to draw more attention to the architectural element.

Stripes

If you have a tall ceiling, paint horizontal stripes on the walls to make the room seem more spacious. If you have a short ceiling, use vertical stripes to make it appear taller. The stripes can be as tame or bold as your personality. Use similar hues of a color for a subtle effect, or paint your stripes in bright, contrasting colors for a more dramatic look. You can also vary the sheen, making one color stripe flat and the other glossy, for a visually striking effect. Do not make the stripes any wider than 5 inches; wider stripes may make the room seem smaller.

Integrate the Room

Tie your small bedroom in with the rest of the house by using color repetition to provide a harmonious visual link from room to room. Paint all wood trim and interior doors in the house the same color. Paint the small bedroom's walls the same color as the adjoining room to make the bedroom seem like an extension of the larger space rather than a smaller independent space.
