Redo A Boy'S Bedroom On A Budget

Redecorate a boy's room without spending a lot of cash.

The tastes of a pre-teenage boy typically are not the same as the tastes of a 5- or 6-year-old boy. If the young man in your life wants to update his bedroom so that it matches his current tastes, you can do so without breaking the bank. Re-doing a child's bedroom can be budget-friendly, as long as you don't plan on investing in a new furniture set or making drastic changes. Instead, make small changes to the room to give it a new look without spending a fortune.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls of the room a new color. Let the child pick the color but feel free to exercise a veto option if he chooses a shade that's too extreme or will be difficult to paint over later, such as black or blood-red. As a compromise, suggest other colors to him; for example, you can suggest grey instead of black or a more calm and soothing-looking red. If he wants more than one color, select a darker color for an accent wall and a lighter color for the remaining walls.

2. Hang inexpensive posters around the room. Use an adhesive that won't damage the walls to hang the posters. If the boy changes his mind about his favorite band or television show later, there won't be lasting damage when he takes down the posters. Frame photographs of him with his friends and family and arrange them on the wall.

3. Put a new set of bed sheets on the bed along with a coordinating comforter and pillowcase. Neutral bed sheets in a solid color may be your best option since he may outgrow sheets that feature a design from his favorite movie or show.

4. Spruce up an old bedside lamp by putting a lampshade on it that coordinates with the new sheets or paint color. Another option is to decorate a plain beige lampshade with paint pens or buttons.

5. Set up a homework station if the boy is about to enter his school years. Place a desk in a well-lit part of the room and provide a comfortable chair to work in. Put a bookcase next to the desk for his schoolbooks. Hang a bulletin board behind the desk. Paint the wall with chalkboard paint, if you prefer, so he can write out his homework assignments or use it to work his way through math problems.
