Hang Beadboard In The Bathroom

Hang beadboard in your bathroom to spruce it up.

Accent your bathroom and give the walls warmth and charm with beadboard. Beadboard, also referred to as wainscoting, is a rigid wall material typically made from wood and comes in planks. Beadboard has a pin-stripe texture and links together with a tongue-and-groove system. Beadboard comes in a variety of finishes and is easy to keep clean. Paintable beadboard is also available if you would like to customize the color.

Instructions

1. Make sure the walls are clean before proceeding. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar, one part washing soda and two parts ammonia, and use a sponge to wipe away any stains or residue.

2. Remove previous molding with a putty knife and a pry bar.

3. Unscrew and remove the necessary outlet and light switch covers.

4. Use a stud finder to locate and mark the wall studs.

5. Mark the height line of the beadboard on the wall based on the height of the beadboard you purchased. Measure up from the floor, and make a few marks on the wall. If your floor is uneven, measure from the high points. Use a level, straightedge or a snap-line to draw a straight line through the marks.

6. Begin installing beadboard in the corner. Install the first plank so that the tongue side is facing out. Apply construction adhesive from a caulk gun to the wall in a zig-zagging motion, and press the beadboard firmly into place. Continue to add successive planks by fitting grooves over tongues. Use a level at the top as you go to make sure it is even.

7. Cut out square holes or notches for outlets and light switches with a jigsaw.

8. Attach the top cap once you have adhered all the beadboard. Cut lengths to fit with a miter saw. Set the miter saw at a 45-degree angle for corner joints. Set the top cap on the top edge of the beadboard. Attach the top cap by toe-nailing 1-3/4-inch finish nails through the back side of the cap, through the beadboard and into the wall stud.

9. Attach the molding under the top cap and along the floor. Cut the molding to fit with a miter saw. Nail the molding with finish nails, and nail into the wall studs.
