Design Ideas For A Teen Bedroom

Include bright lights over a study area in a teen bedroom.

Teens can express their individuality through their choice of bedroom decor. Their input should hold the most weight in the decision making process, but compromises may be necessary depending on the rules of the house. For example, apartment dwellers often cannot drastically change the color of the walls. Budget is another factor that may hinder designs, but both can be worked around through creative planning options.

Color Choices

Possible color choices for teens often include dramatic contrasts such as black and white; neon colors; red, white and blue; or black and red. One compromise is painting only one wall a shocking color, or painting the bottom half of room a darker color and leaving the top neutral. If you cannot paint the walls, add the colors the teen enjoys through the bedding choices, curtains and accessories.

Storage

Incorporate necessary storage into the decor of a teen's bedroom. Set up a wall of lockers to hold clothes, school supplies, sporting equipment or a stereo system. Stack white, open-front cubes, or hang them randomly on the wall to hold small items, books or CD's. Install a high shelf around the room approximately a foot from the ceiling to hold a collection of trophies or stuffed animals, for example.

Furniture Updates

Change the furniture without spending a lot of money. Apply a coat of paint to childhood pieces to update the style. Use chalkboard paint on a dresser to create a graffiti-ready piece of furniture. Add inexpensive pieces, such as bean bag chairs, a futon, papasan chair or hammock.

Accents

Stencil words on the wall. Choose song lyrics, a poem or a favorite quote. Hang extra large fiberboard letters in different styles to spell out their name along the wall in ransom note style. Apply corkboard tiles to a wall for an ever-changing display of notes and pictures. Use old sports T-shirts to create a quilt or curtains for the room.
