Ugly or outdated restroom countertops that are still in good structural condition and fit the space perfectly do not need to be ripped out. Instead, they can undergo one of several remodeling options that will greatly improve their style and appeal.

Instructions

Prepare the Countertop for Remodeling

1. Remove all items from the countertop and surrounding areas, such as behind the countertop or on the walls on the sides of the countertop, to prevent anything from being broken or stained during the remodeling process.

2. Remove the sink faucet and handles.

3. Clean the countertop thoroughly with a product designed to clean bathroom countertops.

All mold, rust, dirt and debris needs to be completely removed to provide a smooth, clean surface.

Option #1: Remodel the Countertop with Paint

4. Follow the directions to prepare the paint chosen for the restroom countertop surface.

In the case of two-part epoxy paint, stir the paint together in the order and for the amount of time as per the product's directions. This will be very important for proper adherence.

If the countertop will be painted in a mosaic design with enamel, glass or ceramic paints, then prepare the colors, supplies and brushes needed.

5. Apply the paint using a brush, roller, foam brush or sponge, as recommended by the product.

6. Apply a sealer to the finished product. The sealers can be sprayed on or painted on. There are enamel sealers or urethane sealers with several bases as options.

Two coats will be sufficient for low-traffic areas like a guest bathroom. Four coats will be preferred to protect a mosaic design or a countertop in a high-traffic area, whether a public restroom or one used by children or teens.

Option #2: Remodel the Countertop with Laminate

7. Follow the adhesive directions before applying; it may be necessary to sand or score (scratch) the previous surface to improve adhering of the products to the countertop.

8. Apply the adhesive at the proper thickness, using the recommended tools. The temperature and humidity will need to be as recommended by the product's instructions so that the adhesive spreads properly and dries properly; too hot or too cold will not work right.

9. Cut the laminate, remove the backing paper if needed and apply to the countertop.

Another set of hands or several sets of hands will be helpful, depending on the size of the countertop.

10. If a sealer is applicable to the type of laminate chosen, spray on the sealer.

Option #3: Remodel the Countertop with Tile and Grout

11. Mix the tile adhesive according to the directions, and set down the tiles at the preferred spacing.

12. Mix the grout according to the directions, and grout the tiles using the tools recommended. Methods and tools may vary depending on the chosen tile: ceramic, natural stone, marble or travertine.

13. After the appropriate time has passed for drying times, clean off tiles with a rag and warm water, taking care not to get water in the grout lines.

14. Seal the grout using a spray sealer. Apply two to five coats, depending on the use of the countertop and the thickness per coat sprayed.

15. Some tiles, like travertine or other natural stone, will also need to have a sealer applied to the tile. In this case, sealing the grout can be skipped, as the tile sealer will take care of this. Apply the tile sealer with a brush, roller, foam brush or rag as per the product's directions.

Wrapping Up the Restroom Countertop Remodel

16. After curing and drying times are complete, clean the newly remodeled countertop with gentle and appropriate cleaners. Natural stone will require a different cleaner than paint or epoxy paint. Paint or epoxy surfaces will need to be cleaned with nonabrasive cleaners if dulling and scratching or etching is to be prevented.

17.Reinstall the sink faucet and handles.

18. Allow at least a few days to pass before setting anything heavy on the newly remodeled countertops. This will ensure that no bubbles, lines, indentations or unsightly etching will occur in laminate or sealed finishes.
