Build A Bedroom Bench

See all the parts

Bedroom benches are a nice addition to any bedroom. Because they can be decorated in many different ways, you can personalize by building your own. Choose a good grade of plywood if it will be stained or a smooth-grain wood for painting. Look through pictures of bedroom benches to get a general idea of what they look like and their function.

Instructions

1. Place the bottom shelf of the bedroom bench on a work table. Measure in from one end and mark the shelf at 12 and 24 inches. Place the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the width of the shelf.

2. Place the 2-by-2 blocks on the lines. Two should be placed on the ends and the other two at the 12- and 24-inch lines. Trace a line on the side of the blocks without a line. Remove the blocks and drill three pilot holes with the 1/16-inch drill bit.

3. Apply glue to the tops of the blocks and set the shelf on them, aligning the blocks with pilot holes. Secure them with the drywall screws. Clean up excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.

4. Place the ends, the front and the back on the worktable. Measure up from the bottom edge and make a mark at 12 inches. Do this in several places on the four pieces of plywood. Place the framing square on the marks and draw a line connecting the marks. Place the middle shelf supports on the worktable, drill pilot holes in them, apply glue to the ends, front and back under the lines and secure the supports with the drywall screws. NOTE: The supports on the ends are shorter than the other two. Center them on the ends.

5. Measure up from the bottom edge of the front and back and make marks at 2¼ inches. Place the framing square on these marks and draw a light line connecting all the marks. This is where the bottom shelf will meet the front and back.

6. Place the bottom shelf between the ends and secure them together with the drywall shelves. Apply glue to the edges of the ends and the bottom shelf and secure the front to the bench with the finish nails. Repeat this for the back.

7. Install the piano hinge on the back edge of the top. Set the top on the bedroom bench and install the piano hinge to the back of the bench. Place the middle shelf on the worktable and mark the center of it. Measure out 6 inches from that mark in both directions and drill a 1-inch hole through the shelf.
