Painting Wooden Bedroom Furniture

Furniture in good condition can be refinished rather than replaced.

Wooden furniture is fairly versatile in the bedroom since it can look elegant, classic or even contemporary. Solid paints offer a clean and more modern finish to wood furniture and come in a variety of colors and finishes. Current bedroom furniture can be refinished using the paint color of your choice to change the entire look of the bedroom. According to coating manufacturer Valspar, the best paint to use for wooden furniture is a gloss or low sheen due to its durability and cleaning ease.

Instructions

1. Use a well-ventilated room or work area for the furniture. Place a drop cloth on the floor of the work surface to protect furniture from scratches and protect the flooring from drips.

2. Take apart the furniture as much as possible. For example, dressers should have drawers removed and their handles taken off while beds should have the frame, headboard and footboard taken apart. Lay the pieces of furniture on the drop cloth.

3. Use 320-grit sandpaper to roughen the surface of the furniture to remove any clear coat or protective coating.

4. Apply a thin coat of paint stripper with a brush over the entire surface of the furniture. Note that you can only use stripper on one side of the furniture at a time. Allow the stripper to work on the furniture's surface, which typically takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on the type of stripper used. Refer to the paint stripper's instructions for exact sitting times.

5. Scrape a test area of the furniture using a putty knife. If the varnish lifts easily, then continue to scrape the remaining areas of the furniture. If not, allow the stripper to sit an additional 10 minutes. Furniture with multiple coats of varnish or stripper will require more than one stripping application to fully remove the varnish from the wood's surface. Repeat the process on the other side if applicable.

6. Wash the furniture's surface with a solution of warm water and TSP cleaner to remove the stripper residue. Use only a damp washcloth dipped into the solution. Do not use a sponge or saturate the wood. Allow the furniture to dry.

7. Sand the surface of the furniture using 320-grit sandpaper until it is smooth and even. Wipe down the furniture using a damp washcloth.

8. Apply a thin coat of a latex-based primer to the surface of the furniture using a polyester nylon paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry overnight.

9. Apply a coat of a latex-based top coat on top of the furniture and allow it to dry overnight.

10. Reassemble the furniture after the paint has dried.
