Hang A Dining Room Mirror

Hanging a mirror in the dining room can give the room a larger appearance. Small mirrors offer few problems and are hung like any other picture or wall hanging, but larger mirrors are heavy and fragile. Not securing it properly can lead to the mirror falling and breaking. While this job can be done by yourself, it is wise to have a friend assist you.

Instructions

1. Weigh the mirror. Check the weight components of your hardware wires, D-rings and anchors. If you are unsure, go to your local hardware store and ask if your hardware will hold a mirror of that weight.

2. From the back, measure the mirror's frame on both the left and right sides. Mark a spot one-fifth the distance down from the top of the frame on each side.

3. Place a D-ring at the one-fifth distance point. Tilt the top of the ring toward the inside of the frame at a 45-degree angle; the mounting holes should still be on the wood. Mark the mounting holes. Use a 3/32-inch drill bit to drill the holes. Screw in the D-rings.

4. Connect the D-rings with the heavy-duty mirror wire. Thread the wire under and through the D-ring and then under the ring and over and through the ring from the other side. Pass the wire under the ring and twist it counterclockwise. Secure the wire to the second D-ring in the same fashion, leaving slack equal to one-sixth the width of the frame. Cut off any excess wire from the twist and cover the twist with electrical tape.

5. Make a light pencil mark on the wall where the top of the frame will be. If you need a visual, have your assistant hold the mirror while you look at the placement, then mark the top frame line and the center point of that line.

6. Mark two anchor points, each halfway between the center mark and the frame edges. Account for the slack left in the wire by determining the height of the apex made by the wire when pulled taut into an "A." Measure this and adjust the lines accordingly.

7. Drill a hole at each anchor mark. The hole should be just smaller than the anchor width. Insert the anchors by carefully pounding each with a hammer.

8. Twist the screws into the anchors securely. Pull on the screws to test the strength of each and make sure it will not collapse with weight.

9. Hang the picture on the screws, being careful to make sure the wire has connected with both screws prior to releasing the mirror to its own weight.
