Dining Nook Ideas

A dining nook can make the most of small spaces.

A dining nook makes the most of limited space near your kitchen with a casual dining environment. The proximity to the kitchen lends itself to easy meal service and an open transition from kitchen to table versus a separate, formal dining room. Dining furniture specially designed for maximizing space works best for creating a comfortable, contemporary place to eat.

Pub Table

Pub tables with bar stools fit nicely in small areas and provide a casual style. Traditionally smaller than dining tables, pub tables come in many shapes, sizes and heights. Short pub tables pair well with large broad chairs, and bar stools complement high-top pub tables. Pub tables with storage space in the table base keep casual dining plates, napkins and silverware handy.

Window Seating

If your planned dining nook has a window on one wall, a window seat adds style while making the most of limited space. Windows also provide natural light and make a small space seem larger. Existing window seats easily transition to dining nooks with the addition of a table. Paint or finish the window seat in the same color as your existing kitchen chairs for a perfect match. Design a wraparound window seat to fit the contours of a large bay window for a custom look.

Breakfast Bar

Breakfast bars offer functional counter space that can be used for all three meals. Some kitchen nooks already feature breakfast bars, but a two-legged, high-top table creates counter-height dining space against any open wall space in the kitchen. Backless bar stools, in combination with a breakfast bar, save space because they can be stored underneath the bar top when not in use. Match the granite from your kitchen counters to your table top for a seamless transition between spaces.

Corner Seating

A corner banquette, or bench, saves space because the bench wraps a corner, providing seating on two sides of a rectangular table and eliminating the need for chairs that could protrude into walking space. The straight angles of the corner and table create a modern look with minimal effort, while benches lend to a cozy atmosphere and the opportunity for comfortable cushions and pillows to match your decor.
