Decorate A Bedroom Interior

Plan your bedroom to fit your needs.

Bedrooms don't have to be just a place to sleep. They can be a private sanctuary after a hard day's work. Plan your bedroom to meet your own needs and desires. A bedroom can feel like a tranquil resort or a romantic getaway. A bedroom's makeover can be as small as adding fresh paint or as large as adding new flooring and transforming it into a bedroom suite. Plan your bedroom around the existing structures like windows and closets.

Instructions

1. Choose a color palette for your room. If you are starting from scratch, choose any furniture color that you like, but if you are working with your original furniture, you will need to include their colors into your planning. Include the floor, ceiling and walls when you are making your color palette. Keep in mind that bright, light colors work for any space, but darker colors can make a small room look cave-like. Use dark colors as accents in small rooms. Choose colors by bringing pictures of your furniture and textiles to your paint store and comparing them. Bring paint color samples home as well so you can see them in your own light.

2. Sketch out a drawing of your room on a whiteboard or piece of paper. Start with the basic shape of the bedroom and decide what pieces of furniture you are keeping and what new pieces you are adding. Keep in mind you need storage pieces and convenience pieces, such as night stands. Add these items to your sketch. Make sure you have enough room for all of the furniture by measuring if necessary.

3. Add flooring, if that is in your budget. Carpet is easy on the feet in the morning, but hardwood works well with most decor styles and is modern. When that is finished, paint the walls and ceiling.

4. Take everything out of your room, including window treatments, and empty the closet. Clean the floors, walls and ceiling. Prepare the walls for painting by filling and holes and cracks and putting painter's tape around windows, doors and electrical outlets. Paint all the walls a new color or only one accent wall a bright or bold color. The wall behind your headboard is a good choice for an accent wall and will add a focal point to the room.

5. Bring the furniture into the room and arrange it as planned.

6. Add the finishing touches. Now you can see what the room is going to look like, and add elements like wall art, window treatments, throw rugs and lamps.
