Decorate A Beachthemed Bedroom With Household Items

A beach-themed bedroom starts with a lot of white.

Look at beach-themed bedrooms in magazines or on websites, and you will see lots of blue and white, seashells and sand, windows and light. But the truth is, you can create a lot of the beach-theme ambiance with ordinary household items. The key is to think colors, textures and natural materials. Add beach-related accessories to complete the look.

Instructions

Color

1. Bedding should be white or pale colors.

Sort through your linen closet and find all the white, blue or other pale-colored bedding and towels. Blue and white are the most-favored colors for beach-theme rooms, but touches of green, purple and pink will also work. Accent the room with small doses of "sunset colors" like orange, yellow and red. Move on to throw pillows, rugs and curtains in the same shades.

2. Glass vases and bowls can be clear or a pale color.

Rummage around the house for accessories in the same color palette, as well as clear glass and silver. This includes items like vases, bowls, pictures, books and knick-knacks.

3. Give furniture a weathered appearance.

Concentrate first on masquerading any furniture or other parts of the room that can't be removed. Dark wood furniture? Paint it white, lightly antique or distress it, or just hide it under a tablecloth or throw in a more acceptable color. Dark walls? Cover up some of the wall area with quilts or throws in pale colors, large mirrors or by creating a fake window area with light-colored curtains.

Materials and Textures

4. Keep curtains light and airy.

Bring in the soft and filmy materials that are popular in beach decor. Use lace curtains and crocheted items in the most popular colors, especially white. Add silk scarves, soft terry towels and luxurious rugs.

5. Use bath salts to resemble sand or beach glass.

Group glass items together on dressers and walls. Fill crystal glass bowls with marbles, pebbles, costume jewelry beads or even bath salts in pale colors. Arrange white flowers in tall blue and green vases reminiscent of beach glass. Hang multiple mirrors interspersed with framed beach scenes cut from magazines or taken from photo albums of summer vacations.

6. Natural materials should be used whenever possible.

Add natural materials like wood, pottery and woven baskets. Hang a white wooden window on the wall, and use it to frame a collage of beach photos. Create a fake window area with lace curtains or shutters and a beach poster.

Beach Accessories

7. Beach gear makes great accessories.

Dig through basements and the backs of closets for beach gear like picnic baskets, folding chairs, beachwear and children's beach toys that can be used to add a touch of whimsy to the room. Dust off souvenirs and mementos, and drag out the photo albums from past trips to the beach for additional inspiration.

8. Beach-gear wall groupings are easy to assemble.

Drape a brightly-colored beach towel over a chair, or fill a beach tote with magazines. Create clever wall groupings with flip-flops, straw hats, souvenir postcards and maps, drink umbrellas and flower leis.

9. Imagine this sitting area in the corner of your bedroom.

Use a wooden or canvas chaise for a seating area and, if you're not superstitious, complete the look by suspending an open beach umbrella over the chair.
