Redo A Bedroom For A Teenage Girl

Vibrant bedroom colors.

The teenage years are positioned right in between childhood and womanhood. For a teenage girl, she will have one foot in each world and her bedroom needs to support this duality of function. Primary needs include: storage, study space, lounge space, display space and privacy. Secondary needs include making her bedroom the coolest space ever, so that all her friends will want to hang out in her room.

Instructions

Redecorating For Teenage Girls

1. Clear the room and closet. Patch any holes (with spackle and putty knife). Tape and paint your room and ceiling. The room should be a neutral color. The ceiling should be two shades lighter in the same color. Paint the closet as well.

2. Position the bed sideways on the focal wall (the non-window wall you see first when you open the bedroom door). Place the area rug under the bed just far enough for the legs of the bed to hold the rug in place. The rug color should work with the wall and bedding colors. An accent color in the rug can be used to add color around the room in pillows and accessories.

3. Paint two of the boards with the wall paint and one of the boards with the ceiling paint. After the paint dries, evenly space 20 screw eyes along each board. Mount the wall colored boards vertically starting 6-8 inches above the corners of the bed mattress. Mount the floor colored board along the ceiling (use the wall anchors and drill) even with the side of the bed closest to the door. (You may have two ceiling boards for a full canopy effect.)

4. String the cording between the eyebolts on the wall. You can string straight across or zig zag. This is a creative project so invent the design that works for you. Snap ID badge clips on the cording and through the ceiling eyehooks. Apply photos, memorabilia, posters, jewelry, postcards, letters and art by hanging them from the clips. This makes for a continually changing headboard.

5. Position the mirror inside the door (mounted well). Install the closet system to maximize storage. Arrange the art above the desk area. Hang the drapes on the window. Hang the extra drapes along the side of the bed by using the ID clips through the eye hooks on the ceiling and by clipping the clamp to the curtain. (Make sure the curtain fabric is for eight foot windows.) (Two sets may be needed if you have curtains on both sides of the bed.

6. Allow for good walking pathways around the bed and place the desk and when possible the double beanbag chairs. Lounging and friends are important. Use one or two end tables and lamps on each table surface. Add a few larger accessories in the accent color. Fill up the bed/sofa with the bolster and accent pillows. The optional paper lamps can be hung over the bed with wire on/off switches. The curtains provide a canopy effect for privacy. Hang the dry erase board on the outside of the door for messages. Keep the furniture clean lined and simple, it is the teenager who is important in this space. Add a few plants and you have a fabulous teenage girl room.
