Care For Hardwood Dining Tables

Hardwood tables can bring elegance and beauty to any room they are in. The wood is durable and, if properly kept, can be used and enjoyed for years. Wood tables are also expensive, so it is extremely important to take care of the table---not only so you can enjoy the fine wood, but because replacing the hardwood dining table can be rather pricey.

Instructions

1. Keep the table out of the direct sunlight, if at all possible. The sunlight is going to age the table, and if the entire table is not in the light, parts of the hardwood dining table may appear lighter than other areas over time. During the daytime you can just keep the blinds closed around the table and keep a table cloth over it.

2. Move your hardwood table away from all heating outlets and fireplaces. The heat can also warp or damage the wood of the table.

3. Use non-scratching coasters when placing drinks and glasses on the table. This is going to help prevent water stains and damage.

4. Control the humidity around the table. You want it to be around 40 to 45 percent to keep the table from drying out. You may need a humidifier or dehumidifier to do this accurately.

5. Wash the table with a mild soap and slightly damp rag or sponge. Follow the grain of the table while you wash it to avoid scratching it.

6. Wipe down the table with a wood cleaner to help preserve the color of the table. You can do this once a week or whenever you perform a full home cleaning. However, do not wash the table too much, because the overuse of the chemicals in the wood cleaner may actually do more damage to the table than good.
