Paint A Princess Bedroom

Painting a princess bedroom sounds intimidating--especially for anyone who is not an experienced painter--but since the whole thing can easily be overdone, less is more. Most likely, if you're painting a princess bedroom, you'll be decorating one, too. That means the paint is more of a complement to the room, rather than an essential component.

Instructions

Preparation

1. Pick a color. Pink, lavender or blue are the most common. This color needs to complement the colors of the furniture in the room, but it may not necessarily be the same color. Keep in mind while selecting the color that your child will outgrow a princess bedroom someday down the road. Don't lock yourself into a dark, obvious color unless you feel it can be matched to slightly more mature tastes later on. For example, a rich blue is easier to transform into a usable pre-teen bedroom than a bright, cheerful pink.

2. Decide if you'll be painting an image onto the walls. This is a matter of personal preference, and it depends on your confidence in your own abilities. Remember that whatever you paint on, you'll want to someday remove it as your child grows.

Possible images include a castle window (easy to paint because it will involve mostly flat planes of color and straight lines), a cloth drapery lining the top of the walls near the ceiling, or more generic images like a pattern of stars or hearts.

You may also wish to stencil words onto the walls. The child's name, words that talk about princesses, castles, clouds or maybe even poetry. For elements of the painting such as this, plan to use a darker shade of the color you plan to paint the room, or a gold metallic marker and gold paint.

3. Make a drawing of your plans. Measure the walls and make a to-scale drawing of the interior of the room. Decide how large your images will be and their exact position in the bedroom. Decide where the furniture will go, so that it will not block any of the images you'll be painting.

4. Gather your materials and remove all furniture from the room. Line the floors with tarp and cover the edges of the areas not to be painted with tape.

Painting

5. Paint the walls with the base color, as you would with any other bedroom. Allow the base color to dry for a day or two.

6. Draw in lightly with a pencil the designs you're going to paint on the walls. If making straight lines, use a ruler.

7. Using room paint or standard acrylic paint from an art supply store, paint the images. Paint carefully and deliberately.

8. When the decorative images have been put up, let them dry for another day.

9. Use your metallic gold marker to add any extra flourishes, stars, flowers or other pretty, feminine designs you wish.

10. Sign your name (and the name of the family members and friends who helped you) somewhere in a corner. Add the date. This will serve as a nice reminder of the giant project you completed. Someday when your little princess grows into a more mature young woman, you might want to leave that small reminder of her princess bedroom, even if you paint over the rest.
