Bedroom Decorating In The French Country Style

A French country bedroom uses toile for wallpaper and a crown.

Timeless design combines with elegance in a French country-style bedroom. A mixture of contrasts in colors and textures, modern and antique, family heirlooms and nouveau pieces all come together. When completed, the room should be seamless and evoke the feeling that it has always been there.

Ceiling and Wall

A rounded or angled ceiling, such as one from a farmhouse or attic, contains muted sea-foam blue bead board up one wall, over the ceiling and down the other wall. A creamy yellow paint covers the alternate walls.

A damask pattern covers or is painted on the walls. The damask pattern may be offset by painting the bottom portion of the wall the color of the damask design or the background color of the damask.

Furniture

A large four-poster bed sits against the wall. The bed may be white-washed or a dark ebony, but it is sturdy and well-made. A large sea-foam painted armoire with a cameo painting of flowers on the panels takes up a corner of the room while a chaise longue is close by. Other headboard frames to consider include an ornate mirror or trifold mirror, a wrought iron headboard or a solid wood headboard.

Fabrics

Layered fabric softly coordinates the room. The blue and white toile curtain panels blend to the blue sheets and white down comforter, while the sheer lace under the curtains corresponds to the lace ruffle of the pillow shams and cases. The color pattern in the toile complements the one found in the blue-and-white striped chaise longue and in the damask on the walls. Lamp shades in muted blue silk with white beads match both.

Accessories

White-washed wall sconces hold mementos from your travels, while white-washed shelves contain travel maps, poetry books and a creamy white crock filled with fresh lavender and mint. An oval mirror hangs on the wall between original artwork, such as paintings of the countryside or seashore. Family photographs in copper frames adorn the tops of dressers next to copper and wooden candlestick holders. A chic Parisian lamp adds a touch of modern while a set of wooden candlestick lamps sits on night tables.
