Make Cleaning A Bedroom Quick & Easy

With the right plan, you can take your bedroom from chaos to serenity in just minutes a day.

A bedroom should be a haven of peace and tranquility, but too often it is chaotic and disorganized -- in a word, messy. It doesn't have to be that way. Once you've set up your room in the proper way, keeping it clean and tidy will take only minutes a day. Your private space will be serene and orderly -- with the added bonus that you will no longer have to hunt for that misplaced sock or overdue library book.

Instructions

1. Put the trash bag and the laundry basket near the door. Hang one shoe bag on the back of the bedroom door, the other on the back of the closet door. If there is no closet door, the second shoe bag should be the kind that hangs on the closet rod. Put a large, lidless plastic laundry hamper in the closet or a corner if you need to corral large items such as easels, kites or sporting gear. Open the windows to air out the room.

2. Make the bed. Once a week, change the sheets first and put the dirty linens into the laundry basket. Fold any throws or extra quilts and put them at the end of the bed.

3. Gather any dirty laundry and put it in the laundry basket. Place any shoes in the shoe bag in the closet. Roll up scarves, knit caps, belts, gloves or other small clothing items and put them in the shoe bag on the bedroom door. Hang up jackets, bathrobes and other items that don't need laundering.

4. Return books, videos, CDs, toys and other gear to their places on the shelves or in the toy box. Line up bins on the shelves in a child's room to hold small toys. Tape photos of the toys to the appropriate bins so that kids can sort and put away their own gear. Pick up any trash in the room and add it to the trash bag. Pick up any clutter remaining on the floor or other surfaces and put it away. Empty the trash basket into the trash bag.

5. Once a week, dust all surfaces including window and door sills with a damp rag. Start at the top of the room and work down to avoid soiling previously cleaned areas. Use glass spray and a lint-free rag to remove smudges from windows and mirrors. Vacuum the high-traffic areas of the room. Vacuum thoroughly once a week, cleaning under furniture, in the closet and in the corners. Close the windows. Dispose of the trash bag and take the dirty laundry to the laundry area.
