Upholster Dining Chairs In Cream

Dining room chairs can look elegant upholstered in cream fabric.

Cream is an elegant color that can be a perfect complement for many decorating styles, from traditional to contemporary, shabby chic to modern. Your dining room chairs can be upholstered in a flat cream fabric, or one with a raised or woven texture to add a subtle interest. Of course, there are also a number of prints available that use cream as their bases. Perhaps the only drawback of using cream fabric is that is difficult to hide any stains on this color of fabric, especially if you have pets or small children.

Instructions

1. Choose an upholstery fabric that matches your chosen dining room decor. Remember that your dining room will be frequently filled with food and drinks. To prevent unsightly stains or the need to reupholster again soon, you will want to pick a material that is easy to clean or at least food- and stain-resistant.

2. Create a pattern for the cushion by laying a piece of paper over the seat and tracing out your desired shape.

3. Lay your pattern over the upholstery foam and trace the shape onto the foam.

4. Cut around your traced lines with a utility knife.

5. Spray the outside of the foam with spray adhesive and attach an even layer of cotton batting. Allow the adhesive to dry.

6. Attach the foam cushion to a piece of ¼-inch plywood cut to a corresponding size. You can use the same pattern for your wood that you used for your upholstery foam. Attach the foam to the wood with spray adhesive and allow the piece to dry fully.

7. Lay your cream fabric out on a flat surface. Any print on the fabric should be facing down.

8. Position your cushion over the top of the fabric with the cushion part facing down. Starting at one corner of the cushion, pull the fabric taut over the underside of the cushion. Use a staple gun to attach the fabric to the wood as you pull the fabric over. Your staples should be about 1 to 2 inches apart.

9. Walk your fabric slowly around the corners and any curved area of the cushion, folding over as needed to help the fabric on the top of the cushion look as smooth as possible. If the fabric bunches or looks lumpy in some areas, cut short slits in the material to help the fabric lie flat in these sections. Apply staples to hold the fabric in place.

10. Cut off any excess material. To hide the staple line, you can add a piece of interfacing with a bead of hot glue.

11. Attach the cushion to the seat of the dining room chair. You may choose to screw or nail the cushion to the chair or you can sew ribbon ties to the corners of the cushion that can be looped around the chair's frame.
