Design A Bedroom Layout For Children

In the well-designed kid's room, everything has a place.

For children, the bedroom is a multi-purpose area that encompasses work, play and rest all in one place. The space needs to be well-organized and comfortable to facilitate all these activities. Most importantly, it needs to be safe. Chances are you don't worry about what would happen to your dresser if you decided to hang off of it like a monkey, but this is exactly what you should think about when designing the layout in a child's room. Careful attention to little details will make your kid's room a safe, well-designed retreat he's sure to enjoy.

Instructions

1. Put large pieces of furniture around the perimeter of the room to maximize play space in the middle. It may be trendy to pull things away from the wall, but this can just make things easier to trip over when your child goes careening through the room at top speed and decides to go over anything in his way.

2. Place the bed in the most comfortable position in the room, away from vents and drafty windows.

3. Make ample use of shelves and storage containers to keep things organized. Toy boxes with a hinged lid can pinch small fingers, so set up a bookshelf or cubby shelf instead. Sort toys into labeled boxes for each type of plaything so you have an easy system for keeping things organized.

4. Position all dressers, desks and shelves against the wall. Secure these pieces to the wall behind with L-brackets. Unsecured, this type of furniture poses a tipping hazard if children try to climb on it.

5. Designate separate areas for each child if your kids will be sharing a room. A shared area for play is fine, but both kids should have their own area for quiet time as well as some shelves that belong solely to them.
