New Bathroom Decorating Ideas

Decorate with bathroom noir that draws its inspiration from the shadowy world of film noir.

A new bathroom is quite literally a blank canvas upon which to imprint your personality. There's no reason that this most functional of your house's rooms can't also be aesthetically pleasing. Dare to go out on a limb when designing a new bathroom and don't take boring for an answer.

If you don't know engage the art of calligraphy, take a class so that you'll be ready to unveil your talent for all the world (that comes to your bathroom) to see. What you write on the walls of your bedroom with a calligraphy pen is up to you, but try to shy away from the obvious. If your bathroom is decorated in French Provincial style, try writing some French phrases. If your bathroom reflects American Colonial, you can't do much better than the opening sentence of Thomas Paine's pamphlet "Common Sense."

Many people take reading material into the bathroom with them, but your bathroom can take reading material to the people. You've already learned calligraphy, why not take a class in decoupage while you're at it? Decoupage allows you to transfer newspaper or magazine pages onto your bathroom cabinets and walls, and even down on the floor that surrounds the toilet. Everywhere your bathroom visitor looks, he can find something interesting to read without even having to use his hands.

Bathroom Noir

Bathroom noir takes the initiative of classic film noir by decorating in monochromatic shades of gray, black and white. Paint the exterior of your tub black, install black-and-white checkerboard flooring and take another class that teaches you create a pinstripe effect with nothing but paint and your walls. Top off the bathroom noir by installing an iconic wall black Art Deco rotary phone nearby so you can actually make a call from the tub. Don't forget to install Venetian blinds on the window so you can get that elemental film noir effect of shadows on the wall.

Glass Block Shower

Create more artistry in your bathroom by doing away with the standard molded tub/shower combination and instead install a freestanding tub for baths and hide the shower stall behind a wall of glass blocks. For a more aesthetically dramatic statement, make the glass blocks curve around the shower stall.

Bathroom Viewing

You've always dreamed about it; make it a reality with your new bathroom. Install a mounted television situated for perfect viewing from within the confines of your garden tub. Go the whole nine yards by installing a surround-sound audio system and customize your tub so that the controls are built into the side or right there on the wall next to you.
