Making A Loft Into A Master Bedroom

Loft

A loft is often a bonus room in a home or apartment, and can be used for any number of spaces. However, it is an especially ideal space for a master bedroom, due to its high ceilings and open areas. There are a few problems that you may run into when making a loft into a master bedroom, namely dealing with privacy issues, closet space and lighting challenges. Here are some ways to change those so you can make a loft into a master bedroom.

Privacy

The first problem you need to deal with when making a loft into a master bedroom is the issue of privacy. Lofts typically do not have doors; instead, they are usually very open areas, which may pose a problem when you live in a house with other people. You can solve the problem with the help of shoji screens placed in the room. One at the foot of the bed can help to offer some privacy, and one placed in the corner of the loft can serve as a changing space so one doesn't have to change clothes out in the open. Shoji screens are elegant and don't disrupt the open and airy feel that a wall or door might.

Closet Space

Another problem you may encounter is the fact that lofts don't typically have much closet space. If you're a man, that might not bother you, but if you are sharing with a woman, she'll want somewhere to organize her clothes. A chic idea is to purchase a plain silver rack, as used by high end retail stores in the fashion industry. You can then hang your clothes on the rack as if you were in a stylish boutique. Shoes can be arranged neatly at the bottom, and the entire rack can be pushed into a corner. You might also consider using a large shelf with wicker baskets to keep smaller items like socks and underwear. You don't want to ruin the modern feel of the loft with a clunky dresser. Keep things simple and streamlined.

Lighting

Lighting in a loft can be a problem because the ceilings are so high, and sometimes homeowners have to resort to garish utilitarian lighting solutions. You can make the loft feel less industrial and more bedroom with some accent lighting in the form of lamps and sconces to help bring the eye downward. Not only is accent lighting fashionable, but it can be helpful in making the loft feel much more like a bedroom. You might also add some directional light bars to help illuminate the space and keep it modern. When turning a master bedroom into a loft, be creative, and concentrate on making sure the space feels like a comfortable bedroom, without sacrificing the modern and creative feeling that a loft allows.
