Painting is one of the most dramatic and easy DIY decorating projects.
Many teens enjoy the process of bedroom decorating. It allows them to modify their space to reflect their own personal style. That makes bedroom decorating a wonderful opportunity for a DIY project. Many projects are ideal for teens to handle by themselves, from the fairly simple to the rather complex.
Marvelous Murals
One of the simplest and most dramatic DIY projects is creating a mural. A mural---a piece of art created directly on a wall or ceiling---can add a lot of personality to a room, and designing and painting one is a great outlet for self-expression. The possibilities are vast, from small flowers or team logos, to larger works such as around-the-room borders or even landscapes that cover an entire wall.
For very artistic types, you can sketch out an idea for a mural on paper and then hand-paint it onto the wall. A less-artistically demanding option is using stencils as guides to create a uniform pattern. Sponges are an option for creating an abstract "stamped" look to the wall, or for adding clouds to a mural of an outdoor scene.
Stylish Storage
Something many teens may feel they never have enough of is storage space. Storage units do not need to be boring and can, in fact, be designed much like any other piece of furniture. They can be made to match the room's overall theme and decor.
For books, a clever and eye-catching DIY project are invisible bookshelves. Theses super simple shelves can be created using easy to install L-brackets (found in most hardware strores). The brackets can hold books stacked vertically with or without a shelf. Designing these units with a shelf may be the better option if they are going to be used with small (less than 3 inches) or large (over 14 inches) books.
Wooden crates can also become a fun DIY project. You can decorate them with stickers or paint. You can also stack them on their sides to create a "shelving unit" or add wheels to make the crates movable.
Repurposed Furniture
Many teenagers enjoy scavenging through flea markets or online auction sites in search of inexpensive treasures. When it comes to finding furniture this way, many of these "treasures" may not be in their optimum state. This is not a deal breaker for a DIY teen.
Adding new hardware, such as stainless steel drawer pulls or jewel-tone knobs, will make your furniture original. Painting old furniture with bright or bold colors can make almost any piece feel young and modern.
Old picture frames can be used as earring holders with a little bit of netting or wire.
For teens that share a bedroom, room dividers are a large canvas for artistic expression. You can paint them as you can a mural.
