Select A Chandelier For A Bedroom

Use a medium-size antler chandelier as overhead lighting in a rustic bedroom.

Chandeliers not only light up a room but they also have a decorative function. You can create visual interest by introducing a chandelier in an unexpected place, such as hanging beside a bed as a bedside lamp, or you can use a chandelier over your bedroom's dressing area. You can create a dramatic atmosphere in your bedroom with chandelier lighting but first you'll have to select the appropriate chandelier for your space.

Instructions

1. This mod chandelier complements mid-century style.

Note your bedroom's style. If your bedroom has a romantic or French theme, a fancy, gilded chandelier will fit right in with your room's d cor. A simpler, less ornate bedroom design might benefit from an understated and simple wrought-iron candle chandelier. Use a funky, bubble-type chandelier in a mid-century modern bedroom or a delicate capiz shell chandelier in a bedroom with beach influences.

2. Spray-paint a chandelier to match the color scheme of your bedroom.

Match the chandelier's construction material to your room's other metal finishes. For example, if the doors in your bedroom all have brushed nickel hardware, choose a chandelier with a brushed nickel finish or a closely matching matte silver. You could also buy an inexpensive chandelier with a finish you don't like and spray-paint it to match your bedroom's dominant finishes. You could also paint the fixture to match other colors in the room.

3. Use a large, unshaded chandelier for strong overhead lighting.

Decide how much lighting your room needs. If you are using the chandelier as a main source of light, you will want a larger chandelier with unshaded bulbs. For more ambient light instead of direct light, diffuse your chandelier bulbs with several mini-shades or with a large shade that covers the entire fixture. A candle chandelier provides little light and should be used mostly for decorative effect.

4. Very large, ornate chandeliers look appropriate only in very upscale settings.

Choose an appropriate size for your bedroom chandelier. Unless you have an especially spacious master suite, a large formal chandelier will look out of place. Consider where you'll place the chandelier in the room. If you flank your bed with two chandeliers, use smaller chandeliers. If you're planning to use a single chandelier as overhead lighting, use a medium-size chandelier.
