Small Bedroom Decorating Tips

Small Bedroom

Small bedrooms are a reality in many older homes and city apartments. You don't need an entire master suite to have a beautiful room. Decorate the small bedroom so it's as functional as possible. A small bedroom can still be big on style.

Function

Give yourself more space in the bedroom by scaling down your furniture. Place a dresser in the closet for more floor space. Try a full size bed instead of a queen to add a few inches to the room. A bed with built-in drawers underneath serves as stylish storage. Mounting the TV on the wall gives a modern appearance to the room.

The window can also act as a headboard by placing the mattress in front of it. The curtains will do double duty as a canopy. A wall of bookshelves can also serve as a headboard while providing storage. Hide unattractive items away in decorative boxes and accent the shelves with small pieces of art, pottery or vases. Plant stands can act as night stands but are more compact. If the bed takes up most of the room install lights on the wall or hang decorative lamps from the ceiling instead of using nightstands.

Decoration

Mirrors can make a space seem larger. Use a collage of mirrors as artwork or install mirrored closet doors to keep light moving throughout the space. Create a focal point in one area of the room to draw attention. This could be a modern grass cloth paper on one wall or an oversized French headboard. Draw the eye up so the focus is on the height of the room instead of the width. This can be accomplished through vertical striped wallpaper and hanging the curtains near the ceiling instead of the top of the window frame.

The advantage to a small bedroom is that it costs less to decorate. This means that you can splurge on high-end items like wide plank wood flooring for a modern room or a luxurious floor to ceiling padded headboard.

Color

Color can turn a small space into a jewel box or an airy retreat depending on personal preference. A monochromatic white room gives the appearance of more space because there aren't any breaks in color. Light and neutral paint can make the bedroom feel larger. A dramatic color palette of chocolate brown, plum or charcoal gives a small room a bold but cozy feeling.
