Assemble Bedroom Furniture

Almost all bedroom furniture requires some level of assembly.

Furniture is rarely sold in one solid piece. It is usually an amalgamation of various components that have to be properly assembled either in the factory, at the furniture store or in the home. Companies often package furniture pieces in a flat box since it makes shipping and storage more efficient for them and it is up to the buyer to get the furniture functional. Assembling bedroom furniture requires some basic tools and an attention to detail.

Instructions

1. Position all the pieces on the floor, with similar sized pieces grouped together. All the screws and fastening materials should be in one location. Sit in the middle so you have easy access to all the pieces and fastenings.

2. Lay out the instructions in front of you so you can get help with the specific guidelines.

3. Start with the larger pieces since you usually need to construct a framework into which everything else will fit. Furniture building works like a three-dimensional puzzle where you should carefully fit pieces together to ensure they are supposed to match before locking down the fastenings, whether it be a dresser, a bed or an end table.

4. Connect pieces together by sliding them into each other, inserting the appropriately-sized screws and then turning the fastening bolt a quarter-turn to lock them in place. You may need a screwdriver for this or the furniture set may come with an allen wrench designed for this purpose. Don't tighten the pieces all the way yet in case you make a mistake.

5. Place wood glue on wooden dowel pieces if there are any when sliding those pieces together and wipe away any excess with a soft rag. The set should include wood glue if it is required.

6. Match the instructions with what you're doing to make sure mistakes weren't made. Screw in the hinges on any doors to attach them once you're sure that everything else is properly positioned.

7. Slide in any shelving units or drawers once everything else is assembled. There should be studs preset in the piece to hold the shelving units in place.

8. Tighten down all the fastening bolts and screws once you're sure the piece is properly assembled. If you are building a bed, tighten the frame down before placing the mattress in it. A dresser will need to be tightened before sliding the drawers in.
