Single Bedroom Storage Ideas

A night table with drawers provides a storage solution.

Single bedroom apartments and homes can be cozy, but they're usually scant on storage space. Without an extra bedroom or office space, many single bedroom dwellers get stuck deciding on where to store extra clothing, keepsakes and personal items. With some organization and imagination, however, there are are plenty of storage solutions for single bedrooms.

Shelving

If your bedroom is particularly small, there might seem like there isn't much room for shelving, which is where you can get creative. Build display shelves above the headboard of your bed where you can place books, jewelry boxes or special keepsakes. Run shelves along the top of the room, a foot lower than the ceiling, to store boxes of infrequently worn shoes and accessories or photos and mementos that you don't need constant access to. You can also build extra shelves in corners or on the wall space around your bed or a bedroom fireplace.

Cabinets

Even if your bedroom is small, you can probably find a place to squeeze in a cabinet or storage unit. Buy small, boxy night tables with doors on them rather and an open table with no storage potential. Place a trunk or chest at the end of your bed to store extra blankets or other items. If you have room for a dresser or armoire, buy one with efficient storage space and use drawer dividers to keep things organized and to make the most of your storage space.

Closets

Keeping your closets neatly organized will make your clothes easier to find and will maximize your space. Install shelves in the bedroom closet to organize shoes, belts and folded items like shoes and sweaters. Baskets take up additional room but are also good to help keep things organized. If you do not have much closet space in your bedroom but do have ample floor space, hang a sliding curtain on the ceiling a few feet in front of a wall, and install a hanger rack behind the curtain. Put in some shelves and other organization hardware, and you will have a stylish-looking makeshift closet.

Bed

Your bed itself can be used as a piece of storage furniture. Some furniture manufacturers make headboards that are essentially small bookshelves on which you can store your glasses, books and other nighttime items. Storage opportunities also exist under the bed. Buy a bed with built-in drawers below the mattress or one that is tall enough to stow boxes and containers of clothing or blankets underneath. If you choose the latter, put a dust ruffle on the bottom of the bed to hide your stored items.
