Choose The Right Size Dining Room Light

Choose a chandelier that is correctly proportioned to your dining room.

The lighting in your dining room helps set the mood for meals and ensures that people can see their food without too much glare from excessively large or bright lights. A dining room light needs to be big enough to make a bold statement in the room but small enough to keep from overpowering the table or room. Base the size of your dining room light on a few key measurements from your dining room.

Instructions

1. Measure the length and width of your dining table. If it is a round table, measure the diameter of the table top.

2. Subtract 12 inches from the width or diameter of your dining table. This is the maximum diameter of any chandelier you should have in the room. A larger chandelier would hang too close to people sitting at the table and they may hit their heads on it.

3. Divide the width or diameter of your dining room table in half to find the minimum potential chandelier size for the dining room.

4. Measure the length and width of your dining room with a tape measure. If your home has an open floor plan and your dining area is combined with other rooms, measure the portion of the space that you consider to be part of the dining room.

5. Add together the length and width of the dining room, measured in feet. Change this to inches to estimate the proper diameter of the chandelier for this space. For example, if the dining room is 12 by 14 feet, add these together to get 26 feet and then change it to inches to find that the chandelier should be about 26 inches in diameter.

6. Select a chandelier size that best matches the three measurements. Use the measurement based on the total dining room size to help decide whether the chandelier should be closer to the minimum or maximum size obtained from the table measurements.
