Modern Color Ideas For Bedrooms

Warm shades of orange contrast neutral curtains and wood flooring.

Modern colors are a favorite color choice for bedrooms because they emphasize sophisticated comfort. Often confused with contemporary design, the modern color palette is more varied than many people realize. Whether you wish to emphasize your room's architectural detail, size or natural light, it's best to choose a color combination based on what you like and how you want your room to feel. When selecting colors, try pairing different types--neutrals, jewel tones, and earth tones--for surprising pairings that may inspire a little experimentation.

Light Colors

In modern design, neutral colors are often used to accentuate light and spaciousness. If you are leaning towards white or cream walls because your bedroom furniture is dark, consider using black trim and a big abstract pattern against the neutral color on an accent wall. Pastel or pale walls trimmed with white have a crisp, clean look. People default to neutral colors for the bedroom because it's easy and visually unobtrusive. Neutral colors don't have to appear boring. Introduce splashes of color to your bedroom with vibrant throw pillows and a patterned rug.

Bright Colors

Bright colors freshen up a room and pair well with dark furniture for contrast. In an old home, bright colors are refreshing. One striking combination is sapphire blue with white trim in a room with minimal furnishings and a few accessories in a deeper shade of blue. If you have wood flooring, consider warm orange walls and white furniture. Try shades of dark and light gray for a neutral background to pair with energizing accent colors like a cherry red or yellow.

Earth Tones

Inspired by nature, Earth tone walls with neutral or wood furniture give a bedroom a warm, soothing feel. Select a few bright pillows for contrast or a rug in a lighter shade of the wall color. Think of blue for a serene sky, green to recall a meadow or pale yellow and tan over a rich brown for sunrise. Bold accents, like a crimson rug or duvet, add contrast and a clear focal point to the bedroom. A woven basket, bamboo or stones placed at the bottom of a glass vase adds a few finishing touches to catch the eye.
