Choose A Dining Room Table

This is a dining room table.

A dining room can serve many different functions. People eat family dinners in their dining rooms, have formal dinner parties and celebrate holidays. Dining rooms can evoke pleasant and happy family memories. Make any celebration or family meal feel even more pleasing by choosing just the right dining room table. Look for a table that expresses your personality and blends in with the other furniture in the room.

Instructions

1. Decide on a size for the table. If you routinely entertain several guests at once, consider a table that seats more than ten people. If your dining room is mainly used for intimate family dinners, purchase a smaller table. Size can also important if you have a small dining room. Purchase a table that makes it easy for you to cross the dining room floor. This is particularly important if you are serving hot dishes from your kitchen. You don't want to stumble against the table and hurt yourself or your guests.

2. Think about the style of design you prefer. A simple design like a farmhouse table with bare legs can offer a plain and homey touch in any room. A more elaborate design with carved moldings can complement a china cabinet filled with priceless heirlooms.

3. Consider tables that have leaves. Some dining room tables are split in the middle, with ends that can be pulled away from each other so additional pieces (leaves) can be placed between them---allowing the table to increase in length. This can be a useful compromise between a large and small table. The extra leaves can be stored in a nearby closet. If you chose this type of design, make sure you understand extend and fit the leaves into the table.

4. Take costs into account. A table made from rare woods can easily be much more expensive than a table crafted from pine. and an antique table can take costs even higher. A simpler and less expensive table may suit your needs equally well.

5. Think about those dining at the table. If you have young children, you may want to avoid designs with decorative details or precious woods. Small children can easily spill food on the tabletop and accidentally ruin the finish. But if you have older or no children, you might consider a more elegant and more expensive design.

6. Consider the chairs you are using with the table. A dining room table may be purchased by itself, but it will be used with chairs. The table should be of sufficient height to allow diners to be seated comfortably. Matching chairs can make any dining room look polished and complete.

7. Consider purchasing a dining room table cover or pad to go under a tablecloth (when you use one) to protect the wood. A custom-designed pad can extend the life of your dining room table by many years.
