Organize A Small Space For A Child'S Bedroom

Keep small rooms tidy with clever organizing.

Small rooms present challenges for organization and storage. You can't change the size of your room, but you can control what you put in it and where you put it. Get creative with the space you have, squeezing out more storage and creating a home for everything in the room.

Instructions

1. Declutter the room. Sort everything into three piles: items to keep, items to donate or relocate and items to throw away. Sort through the pile you're keeping to determine how much storage space you need.

2. Create more floor space. If two children are sharing the room, use bunkbeds to save on floor space. A single child can use a captain's bed with drawers in place of a box spring. Free up floor space by lofting an existing bed to create a playroom, study area or storage space under the bed.

3. Organize clothing more efficiently with a closet system. Install shelves for clothing if there isn't room for a dresser. Add a second bar below the first to hang short items. Use a stackable shoe rack to take advantage of the vertical space or hang a pocket shoe organizer on the closet door.

4. Keep toys in a separate playroom if possible. If toys must be stored in the bedroom, use stacking bins to control the clutter rather than a toy box. Install a high ledge around the room to display trophies, dolls or stuffed animals.
