What Colors To Paint A Teen Girl'S Bedroom

Take your daughter's room from drab to amazing with a fresh coat of paint.

Because your teen daughter doesn't have a home of her own, her bedroom is really the only room that can identify her. Because her room is where she goes to find comfort, it should be painted to her tastes, as long as you have some input, too. Before painting on the primer and repainting her room in the same color pink she's had since she was 3 years old, think a little outside of the box to create a fun sanctuary for her.

Favorite Color

Ask your teen what her favorite color is, if you don't know already. But, of course, she may say her favorite color pink, and there may be hundreds of different shades. One way to get your teen interested is to visit a beauty shop or drug store and buy five or 10 shades of her favorite color in nail polishes. Take them home and paint your daughter's fingernails a different color. Ask her which shade she likes the best, then have the color recreated in paint at a home improvement store.

"Favorite Things" Inspired

Take inspiration from what your daughter is enjoys. If she's a huge movie buff, paint her room a deep shade of red to symbolize a red carpet. Buy or print posters from her favorite movies. Frame the posters and hang them around her room as artwork. If she loves dancing, paint her room a soft pink and hand a pair of ballet slippers on the wall. Buy and frame some ballerina pictures and hang those around the room. Place mirrors on entire wall and fix a handrail across the wall so she can practice her positions.

Multi-Colored

For a very creative teen who loves a lot of color--and you're willing to allow this--consider painting her room in multiple colors. You can paint two walls in one color and the other two in a different color. You could also paint each wall a different color. Keep the walls all in a neutral color and paint the ceiling a bright color instead. Consider hiring an artists to paint a mural on an entire wall.

Ask Your Teen

Talk to your teen before painting her room. Although you have veto power in this case, you may be surprised to find that she just wants something simple and plain instead of loud, hard to paint and even harder to cover up. If she gives the dreaded answer of "I don't care," then you should feel free to paint the room whichever color you both like, one that flows well with the rest of the house.
