Master Bedroom Country Decorating Ideas

A country theme for your master bedroom creates a cozy atmosphere.

The essence of country-themed decor is a design and decorating philosophy of bringing the rustic outdoors into your home. Country decor has different manifestations: French country, Western country and contemporary country, to name a few. Country themes normally do not use abstract or geometric shapes or unnaturally bright colors. Your master bedroom should be a place where you feel cozy and restful, and a country theme can give it the atmosphere you desire.

Ponderosa Theme

Create a replica of a mountain ranch home with the ponderosa theme. Chunky, heavy pine furniture with iron accents plays center stage in this design idea. Cover your bed in a simple blue denim comforter or coverlet, and cover your floor with a dark Native American-inspired area rug. Accent your bed with a hand-quilted comforter in rich reds, greens, blues and golds. Wall art should be a mix of cowboy- and Native American-themed designs, hearkening back to the days of the Wild West. Use an old wagon wheel as a chandelier and install candle-shaped lights to give your room a soft glow. Scatter vintage trinkets, such as an old iron toy train or wooden animal carvings. Use rope as tiebacks for denim-patterned curtains. Display your collection of cowboy hats, boots or primitive arrowheads prominently for this design.

Country Cottage

If you always wanted to live in a cottage surrounded by a field of flowers, decorate your master bedroom to evoke the feel of living in a beautiful valley. Paint the walls with a light yellow or sage color to give the room an organic feel and hang vintage botanical prints in simple frames on the walls. Use framed floral- and bird-themed cross-stitched pieces to fill in gaps where needed. Cover your bed with a French country-style comforter in light colors, like sky blue or a subtle red. Paint furniture in white and throw a hand-braided area rug on the floor. Lighting should be warm and muted, with colored or floral shades atop vase-shaped lamps. Keep fresh flowers in a vase on the nightstand next to your bed, or use dried flowers and twigs to bring the outdoors inside. Hang simple curtains in a small checked or floral pattern to complete your bedroom's cottage look.

Primitive Country

Primitive country evokes the feel of the American pioneer by virtue of the simple and unrefined designs that create this look. Use natural colors, such as dusty plum, brown, green and dark yellow. Pioneers used natural dyes to color their textiles, so brightly colored items may not work with this theme. Stain some shelves in a natural color, but do not add varnish. Hang some dried grapevine and twig wreaths or garlands on your wall, along with tea-stained, primitive cross-stitched pieces. Cover your bed with a quilt made with calico fabrics and natural cotton batting, and scatter homemade trinkets throughout. Folk art and painted carvings of angels, houses and animals, along with dried flowers and scented potpourri, complete this theme.

Contemporary Country

Contemporary country is a twist on primitive and ponderosa with a more modern feel. This theme uses bright colors that pop, with cleaner lines and less clutter. Where the primitive theme focuses on the unrefined, the contemporary focuses on a more sophisticated approach. If you have hardwood flooring, add a multi-colored area rug with circles, blocks, or a square design. Hang modern Western art on your walls in bright colors, such as blues, reds, yellows and pinks. Some modern Western artists take traditional themes including cowboys, buffaloes and Indians and paint them in bright colors. Lighting should reflect a more contemporary era with a nod to the past, such as a simple wooden ceiling fan with a modern lighting fixture. Cover your bed with a comforter or coverlet in a muted color, such as eggshell or beige, accenting with a brightly colored quilt folded on the edge.
