Shop For Bathroom Wall Decor

Your bathroom walls make a great canvas to showcase your decorating style!

From an interior decorating perspective, bathrooms tend to be relatively overlooked. However, these small spaces can offer a great opportunity to showcase your personal style. When it comes to shopping for bathroom wall decor, think color, contrast, and material.

Instructions

1. Choose your basic color palette: Before debarking on your shopping adventure, consider your bathroom color palette. The existing color of your wall, floors, and fixtures will dictate your neutrals and main colors. Note these tones on a color wheel.

2. Pick your contrasting colors: The colors of your wall decor that you'll be adding, along with any decorative accessories, will either reinforce your primary palette or complement it with pops of color. This is largely dependent on the level of color contrast that you choose for your space. Low contrast designs tend to be the most soothing, while high contrast spaces typically have more energy. Once you select a contrast level, use your color wheel to choose colors within this scheme.

3. Determine your style: The items you choose for wall decor should reflect your personal style. Are you modern, contemporary, traditional, country? If you're not quite sure, browse through current decorating magazines at your local library. Find rooms and style that appeal to you, then check the captions and text for a description of style.

4. Shop: Now for the fun part! When it comes to shopping for bathroom wall decor, think outside the box. Almost anything that can be easily hung on a wall can become a decorating item. For baths with tubs and showers, avoid delicate fabrics, original photos, and canvas paintings - the steam generated will tend to degrade these items over time. Good alternatives are glass, ceramic, metals, and washable fabrics. If you love the look of photographs, copy them onto plain paper first before framing. For half baths without a tub or shower, more delicate art items are fine. Just be sure to hang them out of the sink splash zone.

5. Think outside the box: There are many places to purchase wall decor items. Besides bath specialty stores, try department stores, discount stores (TJ Maxx is great), and home improvement stores. Thrift shops, yard sales, and eBay are also great sources of one-of-a-kind items. You can also re-purpose items that you already own - frame postcards, copies of family photos, or your child's artwork. Hang pretty plates or a small shelf to display small items.
