Ideas & Inspiration For Dining Room Paint

Observe and analyze your dining room for ideas and inspiration for colors.

Color plays a major part in creating the mood and atmosphere you want. Choosing interior colors for your home may seem as simple as using colors you like, but using a color wheel to review complementary colors, shades, tints and hues makes decorating easier. For painting ideas and inspiration, a combination of your color preferences, your home furnishings and your tastes and style will help you decorate your home, especially high-traffic areas such as kitchens and dining rooms.

Use Collections and Prized Possessions

If you have a special collection or prized possessions such as valuable paintings, use them for inspiration for your dining room walls. Put dark-colored items on rich cream-colored walls, or pick out one or two colors from a favorite painting and use light shades of those colors to paint the walls. If you collect colorful Mexican hand-painted tiles, use the colors in the tiles as inspiration for color for the dining room.

Create a Mood

Observe your dining room and note the light, the size and the furniture it contains. Decide what kind of mood you want to create in this room. For instance, if the room has south windows or large glass doors that let in a lot of natural light, you may want to take advantage of that warm, bright light and use warm, bright colors on the walls such as yellow, orange and red. If the dining room is in the center of the house or doesn't have a lot of natural light, you may want to create a cozy atmosphere with earth tones such as light browns, fern greens and colors like sand, cream and tan. If the dining room furniture is traditional and heavy, bright playful colors may not be the best choice to complement the furnishings. Neutral or light earth tones would "lighten up" the room and create a more harmonious setting. White walls create a clean, modern feel in the space and furniture should match.

Stimulate Appetites and Interactions

If you want to use your dining room to stimulate appetites and interactions between guests, use warm, bright colors like reds, oranges and yellows on the walls. Color has a strong impact on emotional states in all environments -- work, home, office and public. Red, orange and yellow are stimulating colors that evoke passion, excitement and desire for action. If these colors are too strong for your tastes to use to cover the walls, use them in dining room accessories such as placemats, chair cushions and trim, with a complementary or neutral color on the walls.
