1920'S Bathroom Styles

Accessorize with a clock or etched glass typical of art deco design.

Decorating styles in the 1920s were glamorous, chic and often influenced by technology. Following the Art Nouveau period, many homes reflected the art deco style featuring open spaces and sleek, modern materials. Trendy patterns on walls and fabrics included the sunburst and chevron patterns. Whether you live in a new home or one built during the 1920s, you can give your bathroom a 1920's-style makeover complete with modern amenities and elements that reflect your personality.

Black and White

According to "A Guide to Art Deco Style" by Arie van de Lemme, black and white were a popular color combination of the 1920s. In a small bathroom, incorporate these colors with black and white floor tiles in a checkerboard pattern. Paint the walls white and the crown molding and door frame black. If your bathroom is large, consider using black-and-white striped wallpaper. Accessorize with chrome faucets and fixtures, towel racks and a trash can to contrast the wall or floor patterns. Add a yellow or red shower curtain, floor mat and towels for a bold splash of glamor.

Roaring 20s Jazz Vibe

The typical association people have with the 1920s is the roaring jazz age. Let the distinctive music of Duke Ellington and Etta Jones influence design choices to create an eclectic bathroom with a jazz vibe. Choose wall and accent colors that accentuate curves in the room. Pair a pale yellow wall with red or bright blue accents to replicate the richness and depth of the fashionable fabrics worn at the time. Hang curtains made from Japanese fabrics in reference to the females who often wore shawls with Asian motifs to keep themselves warm when going from one jazz club or speakeasy to another.

Eclectic

Art Deco pulls from a number of influences including cubism, futurism, Bauhaus and geometrical shapes. As many homes in the 1920s featured furnishings and fixtures made by man, matching different elements was not a priority. Mix up your materials with etched glass artwork, aluminum or stainless steel fixtures and furnishings made from inlaid wood. Choose a tub, toilet and pedestal sink with curves instead of corners to soften the bathroom. Hang a shower curtain with a chevron or sunburst pattern and use solid colors for your walls, rug and curtains so the room doesn't look too busy.
