Decorating A Hippie Bedroom

Psychedelic prints are one option suitable for a hippie bedroom.

The hippie culture was about many things, including stepping out of normal society and getting back to nature and living free. Peace signs, flowers, bright colors representing the rainbow (think tie dye), natural woods, fabrics, leather and beads were all representative of this attitude. Decorating a bedroom hippie-style is easy if you keep these themes in mind. In addition, shops selling hippie decor abound online, so you should have little trouble finding suitable decorations.

Instructions

1. Replace closet doors with beaded curtains. Beaded curtains were a tremendously popular item during the hippie era. If you choose, you may also replace other interior doors with these beaded curtains. The beads are often brightly colored. When you walk through them, the beads brush against each other making a gentle sound.

2. Place fabric throws over boring or modern looking furniture. Throws for a hippie theme may be tie-dyed, American Indian style, or simple fringed throws in solid colors.

3. Place floor cushions (such as meditation cushions or bean bag chairs) on the floor. A hippie bedroom is all about comfort. Everything should feel casual and relaxed.

4. Place incense burners and candles on small tables or the dresser. Both were very popular during the hippie era. Even if you never use the burner or candles, they will add a hippie feel to the room. On the same table or nearby, place a lava lamp--a mesmerizing, glowing lamp containing constant, slowly moving blobs (the lava).

5. Hang peace sign or flower power posters on the wall. Any popular band poster from the era (Jefferson Airplane, for example) will also work. Homedecoratingcoach.com also suggests hanging a hippie-style (batik) tapestry.
