Make Different Bedroom Curtains

Traditional drape

Bedroom curtains may differ from other curtains in the home because of privacy and light concerns. Most curtains will be able to open and close, and will have a black-out liner sewn on the back for light control. A typical bedroom curtain would be a pinch pleated panel that opens and closes with a center split mounted under a valance. A new idea to jazz up this older style and completely change the look of the curtain, but still have the same privacy and light control, is to change the header, add in a decorative rod and run a beautiful trim down the side of the panel. This style of curtain is more of a modern take on the older style of a pinch pleated drape.

Instructions

Modern Curtain with Trim on a Decorative Rod

1. Drape on a rod

Cut drapery fabric to fit window measurements, adding four inches at the top for a header and four inches at the bottom for a hem.

2. Sewing fabric

Cut standard black-out liner and sew it to the back of the drapery panel. Fold over the header and hem in the back, and use a sewing machine to sew it all together.

3. Free hanging panel without pleats

Hand stitch each ring to the top of the header approximately five inches apart, making sure that a ring ends up on each end of the panel.

4. Trim

Glue the trim onto the face of the edge of the fabric seam running vertically. The best trim to use is one that has a banding with a small tassel, bead or ball hanging off of it.

5. Install the rod bracket onto the wall, unscrew one finial at the end of the rod and slide on the rings with the curtain panel. Place the rod onto the brackets and screw the finial back on.
