Boys' Bedroom Paint Colors

Football team colors can inspire the color choices in your son's room.

Paint colors in a boy's bedroom help set the tone for the room and support a decorating theme. If you want some color scheme ideas for your son's room look to his interests for inspiration. Colors inspired by your son's favorite activity actually offer quite a few benefits. You'll pick a color your son likes and you will find he probably already has many of the accessories---in the right colors---with which to decorate the room once it's done.

Outdoor Activities

Many boys develop an interest in the great outdoors while they're still young, an interest to consider when creating a color scheme for his room. Time spent outdoors camping in the mountains or playing sport givees inspiration for a boy's room in terms of paint colors and style. Hunter green or midnight blue are common colors. If you want to tie these colors into a general outdoor theme, gravitate toward the greens and other earth tones for the main wall colors. Better Homes and Gardens advises you to choose the room's main color with inspiration from the colors on the jersey of his favorite team. Then add accents in complementary or contrasting colors like rust red and mustard yellow. Look for accent pieces like the jersey, hockey sticks with team stripes or baseball caps featuring his colors.

Out of this World

The opposite of the outdoors kid is the one who can't keep his eye out of the telescope. If your son loves the night sky and fantasizes about the possibility of traveling in space one day, create a room for him that reflects his love for space science. Paint the walls and ceiling with sky blue paint. Add silver stars to the ceiling and pull the rest of his furniture into the paint scheme by choosing a silver, gray or white paint for his bed, dresser and desk to resemble the inside of a space ship. Mobiles of the solar system and posters of colorful nebula will offer interesting color contrasts to this paint scheme.

Manga

Judging from the manga clubs around the country, Japanese manga comics have quite an influence on young boys. For the kid who can't get enough of these Japanese imports, a room with colors inspired by manga might be in order. According to artist Hayden Scott-Baron in "Digital Manga Techniques" the Japanese comics for boys---the shounen---was inspired by Japanese kabuki theater.

Colors made popular by the kabuki tradition are red or dark blue with smatterings of pink, light blue or green and black. A focal wall in dark red or blue looks dramatic without overpowering the room. Add the most common accent colors to room pieces like the dresser or desk. Consider painting your son's favorite manga character in full manga color on the wall.
