Use your California EBT card to purchase eligible food items.
The California food stamp or CalFresh program offers public assistance to eligible recipients. In addition to food stamps, CalFresh program recipients may also qualify for cash benefits. Eligible recipients receive benefits on a Golden State Advantage Electronic Benefits Transfer, or EBT card. When you purchase eligible food or non-food items, use your Golden State Advantage EBT card by sliding the card through a point-of-sale terminal, as you would a debit or credit card and enter your PIN to complete your transaction.
Instructions
1. Apply for food stamp and cash benefits in California by visiting your local county office and applying in person or by mailing your completed application to your local office. Obtain an application by downloading and printing an online application or you can request an application by fax, phone, by mail or in person from your local county office. Locate your local office by visiting www.myfoodstamps.org, click the card in the middle of the page and enter your zip code to find your county office.
2. Complete the application for benefits by filling in all information regarding you and your household dependents. Sign the last page of the application before submitting it to the county office.
3. Go to the county office for your eligibility interview. Your assigned caseworker will schedule an interview to which you will need to bring income verification, personal identification, and Social Security numbers for all household members, bank statements and proof of shelter costs. You will need to bring written verification for all information reported on your application.
4. Wait to receive an approval letter from your local county office. Allow up to 30 days for the office to make a decision on your eligibility. All approved recipients will receive a California EBT card in the mail or you can pick up your card from your local office at which you applied.
