Clean filters on older models of GE dishwasher yourself.
If your GE dishwasher isn't getting your china and silverware sparkling, the filter could need cleaning. New models have multiple filters that may include an ExtraFine Helix Flow filter (found in models featuring 100% Triple Water with ExtraFine Filter) and a sump filter (found in 100% Triple Water models). These filters are self-cleaning and the GE use and care manuals for these models do not contain recommendations or instructions for cleaning them. If you suspect a problem with the filter in a newer model GE dishwasher using these filter technologies, call GE and schedule a service call.
If you have an older GE dishwasher, you may have a model that does not have a self-cleaning filter. If you can locate the filter in your older dishwasher and it pops out with relative ease, you likely have a model designed for manual filter cleaning . Cleaning these filters monthly is recommended as part of general maintenance.
Instructions
1. Locate the filter assembly on the bottom of your dishwasher.
2. Pull up on the cup handle. The main filter will come loose.
3. Remove the main filter, the cup and the fine filter.
4. Run each filter and the cup under clean water. Use a cleaning brush to ensure that all fine food particles are removed from the filters.
5. Reinsert the filters and cup into the dishwasher. The fine filter goes in first, followed by the cup and main filter.
6. Press downward on the filter assembly to ensure it is properly engaged.

An improperly replaced dishwasher filter will affect the dishwasher's performance and may damage your dishes.
