A glass wall in a doorless shower gives the room a spacious feel, and keeps the water away from other areas of the bathroom.
Doorless showers are a popular trend in bathroom design because they give your bathroom a clean, modern look. There is no need to allow for a bathtub or space to open a shower door, and they make the bathroom roomier. They are also perfect in a home with a wheelchair-bound individual because they allow rolling in without the constrictions of a curb or a door. Before beginning work, you'll need to make some decisions about the available design options.
Instructions
1. Decide whether you want a shower wall to keep the water confined, or if you're fine with the possibility of it spraying into other areas of the bathroom. In a large bathroom with waterproof surfaces, this is not a problem. A half-wall, however, will still give you an open feeling without worry about the rest of the room getting wet, and a glass wall will make the room feel more spacious.
2. Determine whether you want a curb or a lip on the front of the shower area, or if you want the bathroom and shower floor to be a continuous, level surface. A level surface from the shower to the rest of the bathroom is a smart choice in a home with aging occupants or someone in a wheelchair.
3. Plan the placement of the shower. Ideally, it should be in a corner of the room facing away from the rest of the bathroom fixtures and cabinets, especially if there are no confining walls.
4. Choose shower tiles that will integrate seamlessly with the rest of the bathroom design. Because there is no door, and therefore no border, the design should flow and not look cut up and choppy with several different tile designs and surface materials.
5. Design the shower floor to angle toward the drain so excess water doesn't spread to other parts of the room. This will also eliminate standing water in the shower, which is a safety hazard. If your shower is large, consider adding two drains for more efficient drainage. If your shower has no walls and the water reaches the rest of the room, use a large drain and cover it with something visually pleasing like a wooden grate that goes with the rest of the tile floor.
6. Choose a showerhead that works well with your design and the amount of square footage in your shower. Note the angle of the showerhead and consider how far the spray will go. A good choice in a showerhead is one that showers water straight down instead of out. A hand-held shower sprayer is a practical, and sometimes luxurious, option.
7. Add a heat lamp to the overhead design to ward off chills. An open shower can feel a lot draftier than one enclosed by a door to keep the warm steam inside.
Tips Warnings
Before deciding on a doorless shower, think about the other occupants of your home, the privacy issue and whether you'll feel comfortable in a shower with no door.
A doorless shower can be chilly because there's no door to keep the steam and heat from the shower in.
