Make A Square Dining Tablecloth

Patterned fabric creates a festive look.

Finding the right tablecloth to match the style of your dining room or kitchen can be challenging as the styles and sizes offered vary from store to store. Bypass the dizzying array of options by making a square dining tablecloth in an hour. Creating a tablecloth allows you to decide the style, color and pattern of the fabric, as well as how far the tablecloth will hang down from the table.

Instructions

1. Measure the width of the table. Measure down from the top edge of the table how far you want the tablecloth to hang. Multiply the hanging distance by two. Add this number to the width of the table to come up with the finished size of the tablecloth.

2. Add two inches to the finished size and cut the fabric to this size using scissors. Spread the fabric out on a flat surface with the patterned side facing down.

3. Fold in all four raw edges by one inch. Pin the fold in place. Iron the fold to crease the fabric, removing the pins as you go.

4. Spread the fabric out again with the patterned side facing down. Fold in each edge a second time by one inch and pin the folds. Iron to press the folds in place and hold the hem.

5. Sew the hem using a straight stitch three-fourths of an inch from the outer edge of the cloth with thread that coordinates with the fabric colors. Sew along all four sides of the tablecloth until the hem is secure. Sew a second seam, if desired, using the same color thread to create a decorative edge by adding another straight stitch one-fourth of an inch from the edge on all four sides.

6. Remove the pins and press the tablecloth before draping it over the table.
