Cheap Bathroom Makeover Ideas
Make over your bathroom and spend thousands of dollars or use what you already have to its best advantage and spend very little. Cheap makeovers can refresh your bathroom and allow the inner beauty of the room you already have to show through. Use the money you have saved to buy some really wonderful accessories to help make the room feel more luxurious. Decide what is important, what needs to be hidden and what assets can be improved, then stick to the plan.
Clean It Up
Steam clean whatever you plan to keep. Rent a steam cleaner if you must, but thoroughly clean every sink, toilet, tub, shower and tile surface in the room. Scrub and bleach areas where mold has formed. Caulk the areas where the caulking has cracked or come loose. Repair drywall or plaster where necessary.
Painting to Protect
Paint is a great, cheap way to change a bathroom. Use acrylic semi-gloss paint and have the paint store add an anti-fungal chemical to the paint. Use two coats of paint to provide water protection to the walls, ceiling and woodwork. Paint the ceiling in a contrasting color or try your artistic skills at painting a sky with clouds on the ceiling. Contrast colors or designs can also be used on the woodwork and the cabinets in the bathroom.
Wallpaper Alternatives
Wallpaper areas in a bathroom where steam and heat will not be an issue. Vinyl-coated wallpaper is easiest to clean and the pre-pasted paper is simple to install. Use foreign newspapers, children's artwork, origami paper, aluminum foil, wrapping paper or greeting cards as alternatives to wallpaper.
Fixture Repairs
Repair chips and scratches to porcelain sinks, tubs or toilets with scratch repair touch up paint available from most home improvement stores. Clean and re-coat cultured marble countertops with specially formulated cleaners or use car cleaners, polishes and waxes. Household bleach will yellow cultured marble, so to cleanse a stain, use repeated applications of hydrogen peroxide.
Add Style
Replace the hardware on the cabinets and doors to update the new décor. Put in additional mirrors to increase the visual space in a small bathroom. Add molding or bead board panels to cover big wall flaws and change the overall look of the room.
Flooring Choices
Replace flooring if necessary but consider just taking the old floor out and painting the cement slab or floor boards with floor paint. Add big fluffy area rugs and the floor is now a focal point for the room. Bathroom flooring must be water resistant, slip resistant and easy to clean, so use only vinyl, tile or specifically formulated floor paint on surfaces that are likely to get wet.
Tile Update
Replace broken or chipped ceramic tile in the shower or on the counter top if you have the replacement pieces. Repair cracked or broken tile using a contrasting or coordinating tile if no original tile is available. Use special tile decals to update the look of outdated tiles.
Artistic Accessories
Accessorize your bathroom with new shower curtains, towels and rugs. Hang artwork in the bathroom to change the focus from the flaws in the room to the new focal points. Draw attention to the good qualities of the room with strategically placed bold art pieces.
