Your toddler will enjoy having his own personal space to explore.
Perhaps you and your child have both grown tired of the nursery, or maybe your toddler has been sharing your room and is now ready for a room of her own. Whatever the reason, you need to consider some ideas to get you started on decorating your toddler's bedroom.
Simplicity
The best ideas for your toddler's rooms are the simple ones. Do not go overboard on a specific theme that will make it difficult to incorporate a gift or your toddler's passion of the week into the room's decor. Use a color as the theme. A bold color scheme will have a completely different feel than one that uses pastel shades. You may even choose to have a white room using paint designed for trim and cabinets--paint that cleans up easily. Designate one area for him to color on the walls by using chalkboard paint (paint designed for being colored on and erased) and creating his own personal art space. Jazz up the simplicity of your toddler's room with hand print borders, twinkle lights, themed curtains, stenciled characters or an art gallery of your child's latest masterpieces.
Keep the furniture simple as well. Toddlers' rooms will clutter up pretty quickly so leave plenty of space. A bed and a dresser are your basic needs.
Plan Ahead
Before you know it your toddler will be a preschooler. While you want her to be able to enjoy her room as a toddler, you also do not want to remodel in a year or two when she has completely outgrown her room. Keep your toddler bedroom versatile by avoiding a race car bed or a canopied princess bed. Get your toddler a simple, contemporary bed that is big enough to accommodate a growing child for at least a few years. You might consider a futon which is a sturdy bed that will last for many years. Then you can dress up your child's bed with the bedding. Have a few different bedding themes to choose from for your toddler's ever-changing interests.
Similarly, if you decide to get a sofa, armchair or desk for your toddler, try to keep the design simple, durable and of a size that she will not quickly grow out of. You can always accessorize to you toddler's tastes with pillows, rugs and throw blankets.
Storage
Storage is a must in a toddler's room or clothes, toys and books will quickly take over the room. A roomy dresser or wardrobe is important. Consider installing shelves on the walls to place toys, books and art supplies. Shelves that are higher than a toddler can reach are best for toys you do not want your toddler to have constant access to such as puzzles, paints and board games. Bookshelves can be used for books, toys or clothes. You can build a bookshelf that covers the distance of an entire wall, keeping it open or sectioning it off. Hooks can be used for coats, hats, umbrellas and puppets. Baskets, bins and toy boxes are ideal for tossing play things into for a quick clean-up or for encouraging your toddler to pick up.
