Decorating bedrooms for teens is a difficult task for any parent or guardian because styles change so much with each passing year. The best bet is to create a space that uses your teen's favorite colors and patterns. Don't forget to include smaller decorations that can easily be changed out if her tastes change.
Walls
Changing the wall color can easily change an entire room and make things look fresh and new. Even wallpaper is a good choice. Brighter colors, such as green or yellow, work for most teens, but your child may prefer something lighter and paler, like pale pink or light green.
Once you have the wall color in place, work on finding things to hang on those walls. For example, your teen might like a space where she can hang pictures of her friends, such as a huge corkboard or large magnetic board. Another option is to highlight artwork or posters of movies that she likes by framing those images.
Accessories
Accessories are the things that set a room apart, and you'll definitely need your youth's feedback on them. Ask your teen for his own decorating ideas; you might be surprised what he likes. Think about pillows in accent colors, such as black and red, and other smaller items that your teen can carry to college: a desk lamp, pencil holder, video game chair, and even a few stuffed animals. These items look great when displayed against a neutral background, such as a painted bookshelf.
Furniture
The type of furniture you use in the room should grow with your teen and with your home. For example, invest in a daybed or futon if you plan to use the room as an office later or if your teen wants to take the furniture into her first apartment.
Find furniture that doubles as storage for holding all the items your youth keeps. Desks with storage built into the top and bottom are a good option, as are plastic storage boxes that slide under the bed. This keeps the clutter in the room to a minimum. Paint a few bookshelves to match the different colors in the bedroom.
