Use Sheer Material For Bedrooms

A chandelier draped with sheer material can make a room feel more romantic.

Sheer material is a versatile decorator's tool. It can filter outdoor light from a window or the harsh glare from a bedside lamp. Sheer material can hide doors or other architectural fixtures from sight. It can also provide subtle or bold color to a bedroom, while matching or contrasting with other decorating materials. Folded sheer material also creates a soft, warm atmosphere when draped over bedroom furniture or walls. Create a cozy atmosphere in your bedroom with some folded and draped sheer material.

Instructions

Sheers Instead of Vertical Blinds

1. Unclip each vertical blind slat by squeezing the top clip. Put the blind slats into a pile, and set them aside.

2. Measure the length and width of the window opening with a measuring tape.

3. Lay out a piece of sheer material on a flat surface whose measurements are double the length and the width of the window opening.

4. Place various-sized coins on the sheer material, and trace around them with a sparkle pen. Color the shapes in, or leave them blank. Add spirals, squiggles, dots or any other shapes you wish. You can decorate the whole sheer piece or only one-half of it.

5. Fold the sheer material in half horizontally with the decoration showing. Clip the left end of the material into the first blind clip. Create a gather at the top of the sheer material, and clip it into the next blind clip. Create gathers and clip them with the blind clips until you reach the right side of the window. The blind pulls should open and close the sheer material.

Vanity Decoration

6. Measure across the top of a vanity with a measuring tape.

7. Use a piece of sheer material that is a couple of feet longer than the vanity top; fold it and drape it over the top of the vanity so it falls over the top part of the vanity's mirror. Staple the folded and draped material to the sides and back of the vanity with a staple gun.

8. Wind a string of white fairy lights through the sheer material, and plug them into an electrical socket. Turn on the string lights. Leave them on for at least 15 minutes, and check that they will not heat up and burn the sheer material.

9. Use a staple gun to staple the fairy lights to the frame of the vanity through the sheer material if necessary to hold them in place. Do not staple through the lights' wiring.

Lamp Veil

10. Run a tape measure from one edge of a lamp shade over the top and down to the edge on the other side. Note the measurement.

11. Add 4 inches to the measurement of the overall length of the lamp shade, edge to edge from over the top. For example, if the shade measures 12 inches from side to side, over the top of the shade, then your total is 16 inches.

12. Use a measuring tape and a pair of scissors to measure and cut a piece of sheer material that is a 16-by-16-inch square for the example in Step 2.

13. Drape the sheer material over the lamp shade. Turn on the lamp for at least 15 minutes, and check several times to ensure the lamp does not burn the sheer material.

14. Use a sparkly ponytail holder to keep the sheer material in place if the shade crown has a finial. Wrap the ponytail holder around the finial through the sheer material to secure it to the lamp shade.

Conceal Ceiling Tiles

15. Use a measuring tape to measure the length and width of a row of the ceiling tiles you wish to conceal.

16. Add at least 2 inches to the measurements of the length and width of the row of ceiling tiles to be covered. For example, if the length is 5 feet, add 2 inches to make it 5 feet and 2 inches. If the width is 12 inches, add 2 inches to make it 14 inches. Measure and cut a piece of sheer material to conform with your measurements.

17.Start in the left corner, and push the ceiling tiles up by their far edges one at a time; wrap the end of the sheer material around the metal tracking. Work your way down the row of tiles until the material is secured by one edge and hangs down from the ceiling.

18. Push each ceiling tile up on the edge nearest to you, and wrap the dangling edge of the sheer material around the metal tracking to secure it into place.

19. Push on each tile until in drops back into place evenly on the metal tracks.
